The statistical systems for predicting baseball and football have been around for some time. However, the one thing that hasn’t really been looked at nearly enough is a mathematical based system for predicting hockey totals.

There is no way of guaranteeing future winners based on the raw data from previous results. At the same time, simply understanding the averages will help point you in the right direction. That's when it relates to the side that the smart money should be on.

Here is a quick look at a mathematical based system that can be used to predict NHL game totals in order to make some serious cash.

## The System

While there are many complicated systems out there, the best process is still the simplest. That includes a simple breakdown of the numbers.

The first step with this betting strategy is to find the median home and away scores based on the NHL averages.

For the second step, find the median home and away scores for each team in the particular matchup you are trying to break down. By this point in the season we should already have a firm handle on the identity of each team. That will be represented in the numbers and that is what makes this second set of numbers so important. By comparing, the league averages to the individual team medians we can see whether a team has overachieved or underachieved. That's based on the numbers up to this point and that makes it easier to predict what they will do moving forward.

The third step is to simply compare the two team averages to the appropriate two league averages. If both team averages are lower than the league averages then that indicates you should bet the Under. If both team averages are higher than the league averages then that indicates you should bet the Over.

Remember, these raw numbers represent averages that can help point you in the right direction. At the same time, they are based on past results and aren’t a direct prediction of what is going to happen in that exact game that you are betting on.

## Complementing The Numbers

The mathematics part of this system will dictate which side of the total is the right side to bet on for any given matchup. Still, it is also very important to consider the other factors that could swing a game in either direction. There is no such thing as an absolute mathematical situation that will calculate every possible outcome. That's because the raw data will never be able to account for the other elements of the game that cannot be included.

For example, the averages represent what the teams have done up to that point. They don’t account for any possible changes that could come in to effect in this particular game that you are betting on. Everything from roster changes to line changes and especially goalie matchups will be absolutely crucial. You have to take that into consideration when deciding what to bet on.

The mathematics behind betting NHL game totals will set you in the right direction. That will break down which side of the total you should be looking at. Even so, don’t make the mistake of putting all your money on the line thinking it’s a sure thing when the raw numbers don’t account for other aspects of the game.
